A 14-acre active site needed monthly volumes the GC could trust. We flew RTK photogrammetry with a 9-point control network and delivered cut-and-fill within 48 hours of each capture. Quantity disagreements with the earthwork sub dropped to zero across the next four pay periods.

Ground survey still has its place on small or heavily obstructed parcels. On open, active, or large sites, flying wins on three counts: it covers more ground per day, it keeps crews off slopes and haul roads, and it captures millions of measured points instead of a few hundred shots. The result is a denser surface, fewer return trips, and a record you can re-fly to track change over the life of the project.
The trade-off is that drone accuracy depends on control and processing discipline, which is why we tie every map to surveyed ground points and ship the residuals with it. You get the speed of aerial capture without giving up the confidence of a checked, stampable deliverable.
With RTK and ground control we hold 1-3 cm horizontal and 2-5 cm vertical on hard surfaces. Every deliverable includes a control report so your surveyor can verify the residuals.
An orthomosaic is a flat, distortion-corrected map you measure in 2D. A 3D model adds elevation and texture, letting you calculate volumes, check elevations, and view the site from any angle. Most projects get both from one flight.
